The problem I have found with qualitative inquiry and specifically narrative inquiry is that it turns out you can’t just ask people questions. There’s a huge amount of groundwork involved in intentionally crafting a conceptual space in which another human feels safe enough to give you a story. And then after you have built the space, you have to hold up your end of the bargain. You have to play too. You have to give stories, to get stories.
